Los Cabos is the home of one of the most beautiful and diverse marine life in the whole world. Its beauty and magnificence has been the interest of many famous divers and marine biologists. Los Cabos’ unique feature of being the meeting point of the Sea of Cortes and the Pacific Ocean also adds to its splendor.Sixty miles northeast of Cabo San Lucas, sprawls a marine protected are known as Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park. Cabo Pulmo’s bay gives way to one of the living reefs and the only hard coral reef in the Northern Hemisphere. Cabo Pulmo serves as a haven for an amazing variety of sea creatures which include whales, manta rays, sea turtles, sea lions and more than 256 species of fish.

The reef of Cabo Pulmo is considered to be a home for at least five species of endangered sea turtles. These sea turtles feed, grow and nest in these waters in preparation for their expeditions to the waters of Japan, South Mexico and Hawaii.

Gray whale can also be observed here as it passes to the Mexican Waters and Alaska between the months of December through May. These whales often attract a lot of admirers from all parts of the world.

Another magnificent sight is the graceful sweep of a squadron of manta rays. These beautiful creatures with their large pectoral fins glide through the waters like angels of the sea. In 2004, tourist of Cabo Pulmo reportedly has witnessed over 200 manta rays swimming in massive cyclones around 60 feet below the water. These mantas may grow to about 24 feet wide, weigh a bit more than a ton and live for more than 50 years.

Sea lion colonies can also be seen in Cabo Pulmo. Sea lion are often described as being playful and curious. Moreover, they are often friendly to snorkelers. They may even swim right up to snorkelers and make eye contacts with them. Nevertheless, extreme caution should still be practiced because even if sea lions rarely attack humans, there are still rare reported cases of such. Sea lion colonies at Cabo Pulmo are located at the southern tip of the marine sanctuary.

So why don’t you take a dive on Los Cabos’ pristine waters and admire what lies beneath. It wouldn’t be a problem whether you are a novice snorkeler or intrepid diver. The different beaches of Los Cabos would be perfect for you. Playa Chileno would be perfect for snorkelers who wouldn’t want travel very far. It is located near Hotel Cabo San Lucas at Km. 14. Bahia Santa Maria is also a good spot for snorkeling. For divers, Playa del Amor with its Neptune’s Fingers and Sand Falls with their dramatic drop-offs and huge pelagics, is also a popular choice.
